Privacy Policy

The information contained within the National Motor Vehicle Title Information System (NMVTIS) will include limited personal identifying information that is primarily for the benefit of law enforcement agencies, including governmental regulatory and compliance-monitoring agencies that may not have immediate access to such data or to state motor vehicle history files.

As with any system containing personal identifying information, concerns exist regarding the safety and appropriate use of that information. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) takes these concerns seriously and believes that the dissemination and use of personal identifying information must be closely regulated. Today's increased security needs not only dictate enhanced information sharing but also highlight the need to balance privacy protection and justice information access.

Entities that will have access to this information will include state motor vehicle titling, law enforcement, and other government agencies. Additionally, the NMVTIS operator shall ensure that no individual or commercial prospective purchaser has access to any personal identifying information contained within a record. The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators, the NMVTIS operator, will be required to have an approved privacy policy in place that describes how it will ensure adequate privacy protections, consistent with DOJ's Privacy and Civil Liberties Policy, the Driver's Privacy Protection Act of 1994, and other relevant laws.
